Good afternoon, AI enthusiasts!

Search is no longer about ten blue links. It’s about who gets written into the answers. The homepage has moved from Google’s results to AI’s answers. Now the fight is for citations, not search rankings. Read more in today’s “Answer Games.”

Plus, you'll discover how marketers are already adapting with Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), and what steps you can take this week to make sure your brand doesn’t disappear from the conversation.

ANSWER GAMES

Forget Rankings. Fight for Citations.

Google is no longer your homepage.

The “answer box” in AI search already is.

When someone types a question into Google, Perplexity, or ChatGPT with browsing turned on, they don’t get a tidy list of ten links anymore. They get an opinion. A stitched-together summary that picks a handful of sources to cite and ignores the rest. If your brand, campaign, or article isn’t in that answer, you might as well not exist.

That’s the shift from SEO to Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and AI/Answer Engine Optimization (AEO). And if you’re a marketer or content creator, it changes how you think about visibility.

Why it matters

In the old world, you could fight your way to the first page with backlinks, keywords, and patience. Today, the game is different. AI search engines pull from trusted sources, structured facts, and clear question-and-answer formats. They decide which names get written into the “authoritative” summary. For your brand, that means either free exposure at the exact moment of intent—or invisibility.

Think about it: if Perplexity says, “The top tools for scheduling social posts are X, Y, and Z,” and your tool isn’t listed, you just lost the sale before the click.

What to do about it

Start treating your site like an answer book, not just a blog.

  1. Build an Entity Home page: one page that lays out your brand’s canonical facts (who you are, what you sell, pricing, founder info, reviews) with links to credible coverage.

  2. Structure your content like questions people actually ask: “What is GEO?”, “How does this platform compare?”, “What’s the cost of…?” Write the question as a header, then give a clear, cite-ready answer right below it.

  3. Use schema markup, FAQ sections, tables, and step-by-step guides. Machines read structure better than flowery prose.

  4. Seed credible third-party explainers. A trade journal citing your data may do more for visibility in AI answers than ten of your own blog posts.

Quick win for this week

Audit five prompts your customers ask all the time. Run them in Google’s AI Overviews and Perplexity. Screenshot what comes up. Are you there? If not, rewrite one page on your site to directly answer that question. Then publish, mark it up with FAQ schema, and monitor.

This isn’t about gaming algorithms. It’s about understanding how machines assemble answers and giving them something worth citing.

SEO made us chase clicks. GEO/AEO is making us chase trust. The sooner you adapt, the more often your brand will show up in the answers that matter.
